Richard Swallow’s new exhibition Cityscape new paintings of East London, the Thames and further afield opens here on Saturday 19th October: –

There is nothing that excites me more than the urban landscape. Walking along the Thames or through the streets of Spitalfields the architecture couldn’t be more disparate. From steel and glass of the new riverside around St. Pauls to the intimate beauty of Spitalfields. Tall and elegant Georgian facades, rich with classical details, mellow brick and enchanting doors contrast with the vast glass buildings of the encroaching modern city.

Richard trained as an artist at the Newcastle School of Art. An accomplished illustrator his work has appeared in numerous publications including The Times and Radio Times. After graduating Richard worked as a lecturer, broadcaster and newsreader for the BBC & later ITV, before taking up painting again.

Richard will be in the gallery on the opening day and all the works in the exhibition will be on the homepage of the website from the opening morning.

Part II Original Prints, Mixed Media and Watercolours 31st August – 22nd September

The Ceramics and Sculpture will be on show throughout.

It’s always an exciting moment as we get ready for the exhibition: around one hundred artists coming together here to show their work. There is no specific theme again and so there is a wide variety of both subjects and styles by artists who have exhibited at Town House in previous years and many who are new to the Open. And many of the artists will be in the gallery over the course of the exhibition, especially at the weekends, so come and meet them…

Doreen Fletcher returns for her fifth exhibition at Town House with east a collection of new work …… Since her first exhibition Lost Time opened here in June 2016 Doreen has been our most popular artist and her exhibitions here are eagerly anticipated.

Once Upon a Time paintings by Chris Thompson 4th – 19th November

Paintings of London and beyond stretching into the realms of fairy tales. All with a magical quality that invite story telling.

Chris took a change of direction during the pandemic and this is his second exhibition at Town House since then. As in his first, there are scenes of London that evoke the timeless beauty of Algernon Newton’s work with their use of light. The sole house, The Painter’s House, in that first exhibition has now become a series of houses, some real and some inspired by fiction or fable.

Chris imbues each of his houses with its own character, as though a person. Set in dreamlike surroundings, Chris draws us in and invites us to imagine what’s going on in these stories told in paint, each beginning Once Upon a Time…
