About Us
Town House is a gallery, shop and coffee shop that has been in an early eighteenth century building opposite Hawksmoor’s Christ Church in Spitalfields, for more than twenty years.
During that time, it has gradually changed from an antique shop to one that now sells a range of ceramics, both new and old, books, art and interesting antiques when I find them. We also have a coffee shop in an old kitchen selling home made cakes, including Queen cakes made from a recipe that’s the same date as the building.
We host regular exhibitions by contemporary artists in the gallery across the courtyard behind the shop: Doreen Fletcher, Chris Thompson, Eleanor Crow and Nicholas Borden have all exhibited here recently. And for two months in the summer we hold Town House Open featuring works by new and known artists.

Thinking about houses and the way we connect with them in paintings for an exhibition here later this year. So I’m reading Novel Houses by Christina Hardyment at the moment, about houses in art and fiction. Where would fairy tales be without the house in the woods?

It’s time for submissions to the Open exhibition here again! There’s always a moment of excitement when I open up a submission, so thank you to everyone who has submitted over the last three years
And this year it’s a bit different as it’s open to drawings, mixed media and original prints too, see link in bio for details
And thanks again to @jesliberty for the wonderful artwork!

The original and large Huguenots of Spitalfields map is up in the gallery again for a month or so. The map itself was created by @atelier_dant seven years ago and then we invited people to come and pin their Huguenot ancestors on it to create a map for printing. Sorry, it’s not possible now to add more names!
The caster by a Huguenot silversmith (can’t remember his name), featured on the map is in the other photo, early 18th.

Happy New Year! Not sorry to say bye to 2022, but time for a bit of quiet looking back over the past year here at Town House and my highlights
2 The first exhibition here was work by @cthompson_art and The Painter’s House was one of my favourite paintings of the year
3 I loved the afternoon our garden was open @londonngs so doing it again in 2023!
4 @fletcher.doreen exhibition Traces here in June and my other favourite painting of the year: ‘All the Fun of…’
5 The highlight of the year though has to be reading our daughter’s first book The Cellist & stocking it here!
6 A visit to @peter.gabrielse in August and always amazed by his skill at matching object and place.
7 Karen Nicol here for @l_d_f_official - loved the gauzy fabric against the stone of Christ Church behind
8 First pop up here was Make East & I loved having such creative makers here so hope to do it again in 2023
9 A few pieces by @rosamundcoady here in December, love her work - makes me want to start cooking all over again! Looking forward to her exhibition here in the autumn…
