I have been painting London’s East End for nearly 20 years and find an endless source of subject matter in people’s daily, everyday activity on the streets, in markets and public places. I am interested in ordinary urban life – what is going on around me as I walk about the city.
Then came the lockdown and we’re all trapped in our houses. So this is an unusually empty and possibly banal painting of a guy sitting in the window of a house in Hackney. The man at the window is central to the image and there he is, poised between inside and out. Who knows what’s going on in his mind? – you can project onto him pretty much whatever you like.
