Painting houses is like painting people. This was the first house I tried to paint a few years ago, without success, and it was only when I returned to it that I realised I had failed to imbue it with any emotion, failed to give it any kind of personality. I suddenly understood that I had to approach houses in the same way that I used to paint portraits, as each has its own character.
