The Beckton FoxThis painting is something of a departure from my previous works of East London. It depicts an encounter with a fox that happened as we were driving home tired, one winter’s night – we had to pull up sharply, but the fox survived fortunately.
The petrol station we were entering is more contemporary than my usual subjects and it’s a relatively recent addition to this part of town, but it lends itself to the kind of theatre I was aiming to capture. It occurred to me whilst painting this, that no matter how functional or artificial the structure, nature will always find a way in – creeping in from the side-lines in this case. Even somewhere so automated and on which humans have become so dependant, can’t keep out that fox!
