Lately I’ve been working intuitively, allowing memory and instinct to guide me in a somatic exploration of colour, pattern and texture. My palette is highly instinctive and colourful. Since 2019, my studio practice has run alongside training as a psychotherapist, working with teenagers as well as counselling adults. These strands of my working life are symbiotic in their focus on focussing inwards, as well as valuing sensory (as opposed to cognitive), processing.
Many things inform my work; growing up on a watercress farm in 60/70’s rural England as the child of immigrants from California and Texas (where we often returned). Having hands-off parents, I spent my childhood drawing and painting or wandering alone in nature, experimenting, play-making potions and paints from chalk and the pigments of leaves and berries. Then as now, nature enchanted, mesmerised, healed and soothed me. Later, art school and a varied career, working as an artist alongside museum work and many years as a textile specialist. My work spans media including painting, printmaking, ceramics and textiles. All with an emphasis on colour, pattern, texture and mark-making. At present I mostly work in gouache on paper or wooden panels.
