Newcastle Jetty is only accessible briefly at very low tide and is a favourite look-out point for half a dozen herons. It is solidly built, but the jetty has been neglected since it fell into disuse even though here are few historic jetties on the Thames and this is probably the most impressive. The adjacent Charrington Jetty has also been allowed to decay badly and is now being dismantled.
It is the contrast between the gently rippling water and light filtered through rigid forms that I find so satisfying. The wood acts as a breakwater, absorbs sound, so all you hear is gentle lapping. A peaceful place but with a sense of danger so you can’t stay long, which makes being there so precious.
