As an artist and designer, I have been developing the technique of applying paper to paper for my still life and nature studies in recent years. Magazines and newspaper destined for the recycling bin provide the ideal medium for my collages, with the printed detail often bringing its own additional interest. Painting with paper is how I describe the effect created by tearing and manipulating each torn piece, to make a unique composition each time.
Making art out of whatever resources I find around me is perhaps a legacy from textile art student days, exploring textures with mixed mediums, using layering and enjoying blending techniques to emulate mark making and to create depth. Today, I use textured paper as the base, using up old sketchbook pages for that, then apply tissue papers, wrappers and pieces from colour magazines, fixing the torn pieces with a water-based glue.
I hope that my work inspires others to experiment in making art with more sustainable methods with things we have around us.
