I am a mixed media artist and a great part of my inspiration comes from a growing archive of ephemera that I’ve collected over the years. My collages feature layered images with bright colour and surface pattern, and emerge from a fusion of painting, mark-making and found imagery.
I collect old encyclopaedias, vintage postcards, cabinet cards and other ephemera that I know will find their way into a piece of work one day. By cutting up and re-assembling these components I want to create new and compelling images where old fragments find a new lease of life and are preserved in my own imagined way. The resulting work has a whimsical and surreal quality, filled with humour, colour and random evocative connections between different elements.
The Park Ranger features two female figures: on the left, a peaceful face in profile looks into the distance, while on the right a lady with a squizzical expression pets a paca (a species of South American rodent), one of the animals in her magical blue field where giant flowers grow up from the ground and down from the sky.
