As an embroidery artist, I seek to celebrate this timeless art form and whether capturing a fleeting moment or honouring a cherished memory, my hope is to evoke a sense of wonder and connection. In this specific piece my work reflects my deep fascination with Wagashi, traditional Japanese sweets. Inspired by the elegance of the Japanese tea ceremony and the intricate beauty of Wagashi design, my art explores themes of beauty, colour, tranquility, craftsmanship, appreciation and meditation.
The making of Wagashi requires a truly artful skill, the artisans study for at least five years before they are considered masters in their field – I too have been slowly mastering my embroidery skills as a student at the Royal School of Needlework for the past four years.
Each stitch echoes the meticulous craftsmanship required to create these intricate sweets. As I manipulate my needle and thread, the repetitive nature of embroidery allows me to foster a focused calm that invites reflection and silent meditation. This work is a testament to the power of slow, deliberate creation, a meditation on patience, perseverance, and the quiet beauty of the handmade.
