My subject matter is the patterns created by leaves, plants, and trees against the light. I aim to convey something of the fleeting beauty, vulnerability and fragility of nature.
I have been working with cyanotype and SolarFast dyes for some time. These light sensitive media suit my work because the results vary and to an extent are unpredictable, so there is an element of chance which I welcome. They are also very painterly. I often use two or more layers of print, which increases the unpredictability and makes the results exciting. I sometimes have a feeling that the layers of print reflect something of the jumble of nature, where plants grow haphazardly on top of each other.
The work I am submitting was made by using actual leaves to create a stencilled image. Where the leaves are slightly further away from the paper, they look slightly blurred, which gives the painterly quality I am seeking.
