Inspired by the festival of Samhain, this collage features symbols which appear in its folklore and ritual celebrations. Chrysanthemums and Calendula, feature flowers, symbolise protection and the warmth of the sun. The pomegranate is associated with Persephone, who after eating three seeds was bound to the underworld for six months of the year. And moths (the Emperor and Rustic moth), are nocturnal insects that embody the darker months and symbolise change and transformation.
Comets and shooting stars swirl around and above, emphasising the magic and powerful energy of this time, while the hand symbol of Lilith and her watchful eye presides over the scene. All life, here and passed on, crackles with energy and movement as the veil between worlds thins.
Created using the ancient paste paper technique, acrylic paint is mixed with flour and painted on to produce textural brush strokes. I have combined this with my linoprints which have been hand carved, printed, and individually cut out to form part of the composition.
