During lockdown I started a project called #onionsinlockdown. Sitting in the kitchen, I noticed the lines and the layers that appear when you cut an onion in half. I was absorbed by the patterns made by the onion layers and wondered how I could translate this into designs on the plates using layers of glaze. In later lockdowns I started making a different group of onion plates that were more introspective as the forms and the brushstrokes became looser and more instinctive.
Using clay has been a solace for me during lockdown and I was able to share the experience with neighbours by leaving clay on their doorsteps. ‘Ragged Blue Onion’ summed up how I felt by the end of 2020 – a little ragged round the edges; sometimes blue, imperfect, holding it together, but with so much hope for the future.
