I have always been interested in the pattern of architecture, the shape and form, texture and colour, the contrast between brick, tile and glass. Drawing the townscape has become a passion which started as child in Newcastle capturing the streetscape of the great city, then University and a degree in fine art where I focused on the urban landscape. A career in front of the cameras at the BBC and ITV followed until ten years ago living in east London, I picked up my paint brushes and started painting again.
I am particularly drawn to the contrasting architecture of east London and the influences subsequent generations have had, through prosperity and decline. I’m currently doing a series of pictures in and around east London, look closer and whilst many buildings seem the same – the variety of architectural styles is remarkable. As each House was sold subtle changes were introduced, in this Fournier Street work you can see how each house is different and together they provide a beautiful group.
