I love to draw shop fronts, there are so many aspects which attract me including the signage, use of colour, detail and composition. I start all my illustrations with an observational sketch which helps me to stamp the image of the building in my memory. It allows me time to study the building and draw out any detail which takes my eye. The initial sketch is the starting point for the final artwork.
I use a combination of materials and techniques to produce my illustrations, including stencils using paint rollers and collage using painted photocopied images of the building I am working on.This work is of a closed second-hand bookshop in York, Ken Spelman Booksellers. After 71 years in business, the shop closed its doors earlier this year to trade online only. I thought the empty shop would make a poignant image illustrating the effects of online consumerism and its detrimental impacts on the high street.
