Paul Flanders: Stand Out Barbers, New Cross 8.30pm
This is a common scene around inner London: a late-night barber’s shop, but also a social scene from which the passer-by and viewer are excluded. The darkness and rain outside in contrast to the brightly lit barbers shop further emphasises the separation of the viewer from the group.
This piece is part of an ongoing series of studio and plein-air paintings depicting scenes around Deptford and Lewisham. I try to capture a sense of a story about to take place in my paintings, in settings that are both commonplace and particular to these areas, so that they reflect both the local community and the environment in which these paintings are set.
