My habit of painting outside seems to go hand in hand with my emotional wellbeing and happiness. This painting was one of several larger works produced last year and depicts an area near where I live. It’s an overhead view looking towards Hackney Central and beyond – the railway station is visible in the top part of the picture.
It was a quiet street and I could clearly see people going about their everyday activities.
I remember that occasionally someone from one of the houses would make an appearance in one or other of the gardens. To the right of the picture a ladder leans against a terraced house, almost camouflaged in a jungle of overgrown, late summer shrubbery. Oranges, ochre, deep emerald greens, ultra-marine blues and warmer magenta.
It was summer in full display. A riot of colour on what felt like an ordinary summer’s day
