I spent a lot of time in the allotment behind our house during the spring and summer months, especially during the first lockdown from March 20 onwards. And when I wasn’t out there, I was upstairs in the loft looking out over it in different seasons and weather conditions.
Sometimes I painted the houses behind the allotment, sometimes I painted the houses and gardens on the left side of my house, which also backed onto the allotment. I took many photographs and did many sketches and spent long stretches just looking out the window.
This painting was done during late Autumn as I wanted to capture the colour before winter. I painted it quite early in the morning, to catch the sun at this particular angle. The cherry tree in the foreground is in my garden and created an interesting way of dividing up the space, enmeshing our and our neighbour’s shed roofs with the shadows of the surrounding trees.
