Nail Bar
Nail bars, once virtually unknown, have proliferated over the last 15 years – small businesses run by owners who work long hours to keep them going. The Pet Shop next door had already closed its doors hours before, but Nail Bar has just shut at 8pm on a November’s evening. The last client has gone and the lights are about to be switched off.
My initial interest lay in the problems posed by looking into a brightly lit interior on a cold wet night, needing to resolve the stark contrast between an oasis of light and warmth, and the darkness beyond. I needed to interpret the reflections on the pavement in a believable manner too….
As a painter I have never indulged in nail decoration, aware that my fingers would look awful within days, if not hours. I do have to confess though, that once a year I frequent a Nail Bar to have my toenails manicured and polished in preparation for the delights of being barefoot in the summer heat!
