Marc Gooderham: Galton’s Flowers, Flask Walk
A winter’s night on Hampstead’s Flask Walk. The florist’s window illuminates the dark end of the street, seducing passers-by with its mesmerising display. I was instantly drawn to the explosions of colour, flowers shimmering intensely under the night sky. The window felt alive.
I’ve always admired a painting by American artist John Sloan entitled ‘Easter Eve’. His depiction of an urban street scene in the Chelsea district of New York is both vigorous and delicate – a street level view of a florist’s window at night. I had been searching for a similar subject myself and found my very own Easter Eve in Galton’s Flowers on Flask Walk.
