During lockdown last Spring 2020 I started to paint plants and flowers found in and around my locality, using packaging as a surface. At the time my attention was turned towards the natural world which was unfolding in parallel with the virus in an almost tragic incongruity. I found nature a great comfort and enjoyed watching simple salad plants growing in the garden.
Studies have found a connection between plants and mental health. Hospital rooms with plants and flowers aid the healing process for patients, lowering anxiety, fatigue, blood pressure and pain levels. Plants also reduce air pollution. Tending to plants reduces stress and improves mood, with a reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety.
I enjoy the challenge of working on packaging. The shape of the packaging fuses with the subject and provides a tactile grid. The interaction between the surface and the subject matter is important: they react against each other yet work together.
