I was born in East London but have lived and worked in many different parts of the city throughout my life. I have always kept a sketchbook and the urge to record the scene, wherever I am, has never left me.
The main theme in my work is urban London, the overlooked spaces and buildings that fall victim to the developer and the bulldozer. Many of these victims are pubs, so I started drawing and painting these places back in 2014. I wanted to represent them as they appear now, often ignored but culturally relevant.
In London average closures are about one a week, and the pandemic will certainly not help. On the positive side, there are smaller and more independent craft breweries opening up in Shoreditch, Limehouse and beyond, so there is some hope of a revival.
