Jane Smith: Dray Walk
As an artist, illustrator and printmaker, I have lived and worked around East London for over 25 years. Currently working between home in Dalston and my Brick Lane studio, I enjoy the constant life and motion of my East London surroundings and am inspired by its buildings and streets, with the ever-changing views, angles, colours and shapes.
This pen and watercolour painting shows the Dray Walk area of the Truman Brewery.
Drawn on location and painted at a later date, my aim was to capture the youthful energy and buzz of the street in an interesting architectural setting. The contrast of Georgian/Victorian industrial buildings on the right and the more utilitarian twentieth century buildings on the left, is echoed by the stark contrast of light and shadow.
