This painting is inspired by walking with the dog on Wanstead Flats near my home and studio. It was a beautiful bright winter’s morning in Feb 2020. The sky and the light were breathtaking.
My grandparents emigrated to East London from Eastern Europe in the early 20th century; my great aunt lived near to where I live now. In the intervening years, I lived overseas in the Southern Hemisphere where the light tends to be brighter, cooler and sharper than in the Northern Hemisphere. On this particular morning on the Flats, the light was clear, bright and warm, exuding a feeling of space and calm.
The images in my head of East London came from the 1970s and 1980s with bleak, rundown buildings, diverse communities and lots of interesting things going on in the nooks and crannies of the old streets. It’s such a pleasure to also find space, calm and bright light here too!
