Emma Buckmaster: Vessel
This porcelain vessel is decorated in a glaze made from a walnut tree in winter. It represents the life force of the tree, that rises and falls with the seasons. The glaze is made by collecting fallen branches in winter, burning them and adding the ash to clay, coating the vessel and then firing it at 1300 C.
The glaze reacts with the porcelain creating movement and shapes as if it has a life of its own.
Each tree that I work with creates a different reaction and no two pots are the same. Porcelain is particularly sensitive to subtle glazing and so it is possible to work with raw ingredients and reflect the very nature of the plants used. The pot is thrown and then bisque fired before decorating.
