The windows of this beautiful kitchen face north and west – to paint it, I had to avoid late afternoon light, which would have changed things considerably; the light shifted and brightened, but overall the direction remained roughly constant. It was an unseasonably hot spring day, and the open back door allowed the sound of birds to filter into the kitchen from the garden as I painted. This light, airy room is filled with items collected over the years, and whilst people moved around the kitchen, occasionally moving things, the overall effect was one of deep, peaceful calm.
I enjoyed the contrast between the yellow of the walls, with its deeper tones, and the bright pale buttery yellow of the picked flowers. It’s a busy scene, but the windows and table, with their structure of horizontals and verticals, offset the more varied forms of the daily objects.
