At the time of painting, only one door into the library from the beautiful entrance hall was kept open, which seemed somewhat poignant given that the library’s future was hanging in the balance of council decision-making. The library was closed during the pandemic, for a Coronavirus vaccines trials centre, leading to much local confusion as to whether the library would ever reopen or not. This beautiful building served the East End for nearly one hundred years, offering the possibilities of reading to countless children and adults over time, including through the Blitz.
