I spent several hours painting little watercolours and drawings to prepare for this painting at Dennis Severs’ House. These items of clothing, catching the light in the dark space at the top of the staircase, have a mysterious quality suggestive of the people who may have come and gone in the building across the centuries. I love the way the light passes through the thin fabrics either lighting up details, or obscuring seams or embroidery in shadow.
