One thing that was important to me during lockdown? Apart from painting, which just about saved my wits, something I longed to do for those shut months was to get back up to my end of the City – specifically EC3 and Aldgate – and just be. There.
I channelled this into many paintings and drawings, mostly from my own photos, but now and then with a little help from Google Earth (don’t tell). The attached painting is of a very particular view of Fenchurch Street, showing the East India Arms (in red), from the approximate site of Poverty Corner. Somewhere in this painting is the entrance to London’s best alleyway.
