My life in the past year has become an obsessive addiction to the news: waiting, ever hopeful, that something would change soon. My wishes were never answered and instead I was greeted by politicians, statisticians, epidemiologists and the media, imparting information about testing, vaccines and quarantine.
As the months wore on, I started to pretend that the 5pm briefings were a form of alternative entertainment, like a circus perhaps and that if I looked hard enough, any moment, one of the characters in front of me would announce it was all a joke really. Nothing ever changed, they meant it and perhaps I feel a twinge of pity for those characters as they perform for us – perhaps they are as captive as I am.
I have always enjoyed the visual language of circuses and the characters are a little clown-like perhaps, entertaining, performative, but slightly scary.
