All The Fun Of…
Since early childhood fairgrounds have fascinated me. We used to spend a week every year at the seaside and since then I have always been drawn to the bright lights and brilliant colours that are such a contrast to the drab greyness of daily life.
Of course, the rides never lived up to expectation and the prizes for hooking a plastic duck were tawdry and lasted only a few days before disintegrating, but no matter. I was never one to be attracted to the dare-devil rides designed to inspire terror, but decades later I still recall with pleasure the sight of the lurid graphics and garish multi-coloured light bulbs, roundabouts spinning and striped horses bobbing up and down.
Until recently, a funfair arrived two or three times a year on Wanstead Flats close to home, but it often rained and the ground became a sea of mud. And yet…. there was always a glimmer of hope: bright lights, gay colours and the possibility of better times ahead!
