During lockdown, like many other artists, I realised how important human contact was. As a portrait artist, I no longer had access to everyday inspiration; as a human being, I could no longer see close friends. Even the simplest act of walking through London and offering change to a street busker was gone.
‘The Winter Busker’ was painted in the Winter of 2020/2021 during the brief period between lockdowns. It is also the painting I was working on when a deep personal loss occurred. As such, it reminds me of the one thing that was important to me during lockdown: people.
