5 Star Batteries
The A13 has a sad post-industrial feel of faded glory awaiting change, similar to the London Docks during the 80s. I used to wander round the Isle of Dogs over thirty years ago, aware that it was on the verge of transition and I get the same feeling today on this stretch of highway.
5 Star Batteries lies on what was once the main A13, but this part of the old road has become the A1306. It now has a despondent air about it – the wreck of The Cosy Tea Room is just along the way awaiting its fate. What appealed to me about Five Star Batteries was the bright orange on a road where the only colour emanates from the signage on car washes, garages and cheap tyre outlets.
The lone man at the bus stop seems marooned, uneasily waiting in no man’s land for a bus that might be a long time coming.
